How Lyocell Fabric Is Made: The Closed-Loop Process
Lyocell is made in what the industry calls a closed loop. The liquid used to dissolve the wood is caught and used again instead of being tipped away. Good mills recover more than 99 percent of it. That one fact is what separates lyocell from viscose.
Four steps take wood to thread.
- Chipping. Timber is cut into chips and broken down into raw pulp.
- Dissolving. The pulp goes into a solvent called amine oxide. It dissolves rather than reacts, which is why it can be recovered.
- Spinning. The thick liquid is pushed through tiny holes into a bath, where it hardens into thread.
- Washing. The thread is washed and dried, and the solvent is caught for the next batch.

- Comfort against skin. Smooth surface suits eczema, dermatitis and sensitive skin without chafing.
- Multiple wears between washes. Odour resistance reduces laundry frequency, which saves water at use stage.
- Shape retention. Resists shrinking and wrinkling better than most rayons after washing.
- Blends well. Combines with cotton, linen, silk and wool, usually improving pilling resistance in the blend.
Disadvantages of Lyocell
- Cost. Sits above cotton because the process is technology-intensive rather than agricultural.
- Some colours are hard to get. The fibre surface holds dye less readily, so the colour range is narrower than cotton's.
- First-wash shrinkage. Commonly 3 to 5 percent on the first cycle, so patterns need allowance built in.
- Heat sensitivity. Hot water and high dryer settings weaken and shrink it, unlike cotton.
- It is still a chemical process. The solvent is safe and reused, but this is not a mechanical process like spinning cotton.

Is Lyocell Fabric Eco-Friendly?
