What Is Mulmul Cotton?
Mulmul cotton is prized for one thing above all: how little fabric it takes to make a garment feel light on the body. Its open weave allows air to pass through easily, while fine cotton yarn gives it the softness associated with premium summer fabrics.
The name has deep roots in Bengal, where exceptionally fine muslin was once woven in grades such as mulmul khas. Modern mulmul is rarely woven to those historic fineness levels, so claims that today's commercial fabric matches royal-era muslin should be treated carefully.
In contemporary textile trade, mulmul generally refers to a very fine, lightweight plain-woven cotton, commonly around 50 to 90 GSM. Its low density gives it the airy handle, softness and slight transparency that make it useful for summer clothing, baby textiles and lightweight home furnishings.
What to check: GSM alone does not establish that a fabric is mulmul. Ask for the yarn count, weave construction, width and finishing details alongside the quoted weight.
How Is Mulmul Cotton Made?
The process starts with fine cotton yarn. Longer fibres are generally preferred because they produce smoother, more consistent yarn with fewer neps. Combing removes shorter fibres and impurities before spinning.
Mulmul is woven in a balanced plain weave, with each warp yarn passing over and under the weft in a regular sequence. The relatively low yarn density leaves small spaces between the threads, creating the fabric's characteristic openness.
Finishing affects the final handle. Mulmul is usually kept soft rather than heavily starched, and some fabrics receive washing or enzyme treatments to improve softness.
The distinction between combed cotton and carded cotton matters here because very fine, lightweight fabrics need yarn with enough consistency to withstand weaving.

Baby textiles are another established use. Swaddles, muslin squares and lightweight wraps benefit from the fabric's softness and open construction.
Home textiles use the same characteristics in summer bedcovers, curtains and layered dohars. The fabric can also be block printed or screen printed effectively, making it useful for lightweight printed apparel.
Design consideration: Single-layer mulmul can be too sheer for fitted garments. Double layers, linings or looser silhouettes should be considered during development rather than added after sampling.
What Are the Different Types of Mulmul Cotton?

Mulmul and muslin are related but not interchangeable terms. Muslin describes a much broader range of plain-woven cotton fabrics, while mulmul generally refers to the finer, lighter end of that range. A heavier muslin fabric should not automatically be marketed as mulmul.

How Much Does Mulmul Cotton Cost?
Mulmul pricing depends on specification rather than the name alone. Yarn quality, GSM, weaving method, finishing and certification can all shift the quotation.
- Yarn count: Finer combed yarn generally costs more than coarser carded yarn.
- GSM: Lower GSM reduces the amount of cotton used per metre, although very fine yarn can increase processing costs.
- Production method: Handloom production usually carries a different cost structure from power-loom production.
- Finishing: Dyeing, printing, washing and certification add to the finished price.
Indian wholesale listings in 2026 broadly place plain cotton mull and mulmul around ₹100 to ₹350 per metre before GST, but this is directional rather than a market benchmark.
When comparing suppliers, request GSM, yarn count and width together. Two fabrics sold as mulmul can behave very differently when one is 50 GSM and the other is 90 GSM.
How to Care for Mulmul Cotton?
- Wash gently: Use cold water and a mild cycle to protect the open weave.
- Avoid wringing: Twisting can distort the spacing between yarns.
- Dry in shade: Direct sunlight can weaken fine cotton fibres over time.
- Iron while slightly damp: Medium heat and light steam are usually sufficient.
- Expect initial shrinkage: Wash-test fabric before finalising production measurements.
Is Mulmul Cotton Sustainable?
Mulmul has a useful sustainability advantage that is easy to overlook: it is lightweight. A garment made from 60 GSM cotton uses substantially less fibre than an equivalent garment made from a much heavier fabric. That reduces the material requirement of the finished product, although it does not by itself establish that the fabric has a low environmental footprint.
Material Efficiency
The sustainability of mulmul still depends on the cotton source, farming practices, dyeing and processing. Organic cotton can reduce reliance on synthetic agricultural inputs, while unblended cotton also has a simpler end-of-life pathway than a cotton-synthetic blend.
Durability Considerations
Lightweight construction comes with a trade-off. Mulmul can be less resistant to abrasion and seam stress than heavier cottons. A fabric that uses less fibre but needs frequent replacement may not deliver the same lifecycle benefits as a more durable garment.
Certification Scope
GOTS can address organic fibre content alongside environmental and social criteria across processing. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 has a different purpose: it tests textiles for specified harmful substances. Neither certification alone proves that a particular mulmul fabric is sustainable in every respect.
Mulmul Cotton Customization Options for Brands
For brands developing mulmul garments, shrinkage should be settled before pattern cutting. Fine cotton can change noticeably after its first wash, and that change needs to be built into the specification.
- GSM adjustment: Yarn count and sett can be modified to achieve a target weight. A 50 GSM fabric will behave very differently from a 90 GSM one.
- Double-layer construction: Two lightweight layers can improve opacity without introducing a heavy lining.
- Dyeing and printing: Mulmul can support natural, reactive and printed finishes, subject to the required colour and fastness.
- Wash finishing: Pre-washing can help establish the finished dimensions before cutting.
Development tip: Approve a washed swatch rather than a loom-state sample. The hand feel, dimensions and drape after washing are what the finished garment will actually have.
